<image:caption>The fourth woman I want to celebrate this month is someone deeply personal to me. My best friend, Lori Medlin Loriand I met 18 years ago in a Mommy and Me class when we were both new moms trying to figure out life, motherhood, and everything in between. If you’ve ever walked into one of those rooms, you know the feeling — you’re exhausted, unsure of yourself, and hoping someone else there understands what you’re going through. Lori did. What started as two women navigating early motherhood turned into a friendship that has carried us through nearly two decades of life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I sat down with Kesha Knighton Hughes, founder of the Grace and Wisdom Institute, I expected to talk about nonprofit growth and enrichment programs. What I didn’t expect was to rethink how we’re raising the next generation of leaders. It started with something simple: backpacks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Brave Leadership Is a Choice: Getting Comfortable With Discomfort (and Using Your Voice Anyway) with Crystal Whitaker</image:title>
<image:caption>We talked about what it was like growing up biracial—how Crystal moved between predominantly white schools and predominantly Black schools, and how each came with its own kind of identity friction. In predominantly white spaces, she internalized things she didn’t even realize were being absorbed—biases, assumptions, messages about what “normal” looked like. And when she moved to a predominantly Black school for the first time, she remembers being worried. Not because she didn’t want to be around kids who looked like her. But because she didn’t know what she had internalized until she was inside a new environment that reflected it back to her.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Brave Leadership Is a Choice: Getting Comfortable With Discomfort (and Using Your Voice Anyway) with Crystal Whitaker - Crystal credited Paige Ray (who helped connect us) for recognizing her potential in the brand space and encouraging her to expand beyond weddings.</image:title>
<image:caption>From there, Crystal’s corporate background kicked in and she saw the gap: People weren’t just craving beautiful photos. They were craving alignment. They wanted imagery that actually matched their voice. Their values. Their truth. Their lived experience. And then something happened: People started asking her how she was doing it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Brave Leadership Is a Choice: Getting Comfortable With Discomfort (and Using Your Voice Anyway) with Crystal Whitaker - In her closing thoughts, Crystal said two things I want tattooed on the inside of every leader’s eyelids:</image:title>
<image:caption>Use your voice. Your power is in your voice. Start there. Don’t co-opt movements. Show up for the cause, yes—but don’t take it over. Don’t rewrite it to make yourself the hero. Don’t treat justice like a trend you can rebrand. There’s room for multiple groups to get free at the same time. Anything else is just recycled oppression in a different outfit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking The Silence of Widowhood; The Woman’s Health Crisis No one is Talking About with Carolyn Moor, founder of Modern Widows Club</image:title>
<image:caption>She went home to two young daughters, a demanding career, and a life that would never look the same again. One day, she was a confident executive running an interior design firm with 50 employees. The next, she was “someone’s widow”—with no roadmap, no advocacy, and no systems designed to support her. What followed was profound isolation. Carolyn describes lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, overwhelmed by the feeling that no one—not her neighborhood, not her city, not her country—understood the intensity of what she was carrying. At the time, there was no widow mentoring. No widow leadership. No long-term care model. Just silence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking The Silence of Widowhood; The Woman’s Health Crisis No one is Talking About with Carolyn Moor, founder of Modern Widows Club - Widowhood is not a niche issue. It is a women’s health issue, an equity issue, and a leadership issue. This episode is a call to stop whispering. To stop erasing. To see widows not as something tragic to look away from—but as powerful women worthy of care, visibility, and systemic change.</image:title>

<image:caption>In this episode, Ana shares how discovering Human Design gave her language for something she had always felt but couldn’t fully articulate. It wasn’t about blowing her life up overnight or rejecting everything she had built. It was about finally asking better questions: What isn’t a fit? What need isn’t being met? Is this discomfort an inside job, or a sign I’ve outgrown the container I’m in? During the pandemic pause, when the events industry shut down and the busyness disappeared, those questions got louder. Ana made the gut-wrenching decision to end her engagement, put her life in storage, and get on a train with no clear destination.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When Motherhood Cracks the Mask For June, everything came to a head after becoming a mother at 40. What showed up wasn’t softness or serenity—it was rage. Not because she was failing. But because old survival patterns resurfaced: Over-functioning Hypervigilance Emotional self-abandonment Carrying everyone else while losing herself Her anger wasn’t random. It was protective. It was saying: Something here isn’t sustainable. And once she stopped fearing it, everything changed.</image:caption>

Dr. Maria Uloko, one of a small number of urologists with advanced vulva-focused training—an actual disruptor reshaping the field with research, education, and new models of care. Together, they’re building Vulva La Revolution—a documentary and a movement designed to expose the crisis, educate the public, and force change in the institutions that have failed women for centuries.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You Don’t Have to Go: Rewriting Your Holiday Boundaries with Liz Svatek</image:title>
<image:caption>Liz—Rapid Transformational Therapist, bestselling author of Finding Your Diamonds, and CEO of Warrior Women Inc.—walked onto my show and said the sentence so many of us needed years ago: “You don’t have to go.” Not to the gathering that makes your body tighten. Not to the home that feels more like emotional quicksand than comfort. Not to the table where you’ve spent your entire life managing other people’s dysfunction. Liz knows this intimately. She grew up in a house where love and fear lived side by side, where the ground shifted daily, where she became what she calls “the queen of eggshells”—a role so many daughters know too well. And for years, even into adulthood, she kept trying to perform her way into a family system that could never give her safety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You Don’t Have to Go: Rewriting Your Holiday Boundaries with Liz Svatek</image:title>
<image:caption>Because here’s the part most of us overlook: You’re allowed to decide how you want to feel during the holidays. Not how you’ve always felt. Not how your family expects you to feel. Not how tradition demands you feel. You get to choose peace. You get to choose calm. You get to choose joy—real joy, not the kind wrapped in perfectionism or survival. Liz and I talked about what it means to redesign a season you once endured. To choose comfort over chaos. To create new rituals that honor the woman you are now. To stop performing and start living. She reminded me—and all of us—that the holidays don’t have to be inherited.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. Portia Preston on the Hidden Cost of Hustle: Why Women—Especially Black Women & Caregivers—Are Paying the Highest Price</image:title>
<image:caption>In her book Hustle, Flow, or Let It Go?: A Guide to Shame-Free Wellness That Honors Your Reality and Gives You Life (Self-Care for Everyone, Prevent Burnout, Overcome Stress), Dr. Portia explains that “hustle” isn’t inherently bad. We all have moments where we’re laser-focused, energized, in flow. The danger comes when hustle begins to erode what you value most: Your peace Your health Your relationships Your sense of worth Your identity Hustle becomes harmful when it’s fueled by shame, comparison, and expectations that never belonged to you. This is where the shame spiral kicks in—one of the most common yet least-talked-about patterns in women’s mental health.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. Portia Preston on the Hidden Cost of Hustle: Why Women—Especially Black Women & Caregivers—Are Paying the Highest Price</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my favorite insights from Dr. Portia is her SANE Framework, a compassionate method that helps you slow down and break the cycle of overwork and self-punishment. S – Slow down & reflect Pause before you push. Ask: What am I feeling right now? What’s driving me? A – Acknowledge your reality Not your “should.” Your reality. Do you have support? Resources? Time? Emotional bandwidth? N – Navigate with intention Choose steps that align with your values—not social media’s version of success. E – Evaluate & adapt Hustle culture tells us to “power through.” SANE tells us: Pause. Recalculate. Pivot. This framework is designed to be sustainable, adaptable, and deeply human.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. Portia Preston on the Hidden Cost of Hustle: Why Women—Especially Black Women & Caregivers—Are Paying the Highest Price</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether caring for children, aging parents, disabled loved ones, students, communities, workplaces, caregivers (usually women) are taught to give endlessly and ask for nothing. We call it love. We call it duty. We call it “being strong.” But as Dr. Portia reminds us: If the caregiver breaks, the entire system breaks. Caregivers deserve wellness. Caregivers deserve boundaries. Caregivers deserve rest. Caregivers deserve to be cared for, too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - History Has Its Eyes on Us: From Hamilton to Hitler to Trump’s America</image:title>
<image:caption>We started in London — my dad’s first trip there, my son’s too. Every tour, every stop was steeped in World War II. The Churchill War Rooms. The HMS Belfast. Bletchley Park — where the codebreakers cracked the Enigma machine. Each site was a lesson in human resilience and horror. And at every stop, our tour guides — gentle, polite, informed — asked where we were from. When I’d say “California,” there was always a visible exhale, a subtle easing of tension. You could feel it. A kind of global concern. Because to Europeans, the rise of Trumpism — and the extremism behind Project 2025 — feels eerily familiar. They’ve seen what happens when democracies surrender to strongmen. When propaganda replaces truth. When citizens trade freedom for order.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - History Has Its Eyes on Us: From Hamilton to Hitler to Trump’s America</image:title>
<image:caption>Eighty years later, Europe still remembers. They’ve preserved the bombed-out buildings, the bunkers, the memorials. They don’t sanitize history — they showcase it, flaws and all. In Germany, they don’t hide from the past. They teach it. They say: This happened. This is how it happened. Never again. And yet… here we are, in 2025, watching the same storylines unfold in America. ✓ Access to books being restricted. ✓ Journalists labeled “the enemy of the people.” ✓ Immigrants demonized. ✓ Education and federal agencies threatened with “loyalty purges.” It’s as if we learned nothing. Or worse — we forgot on purpose.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - History Has Its Eyes on Us: From Hamilton to Hitler to Trump’s America</image:title>
<image:caption>Somewhere over the Atlantic, I rewatched Hamilton on the plane. And suddenly, its message hit differently. Every lyric, every cabinet battle, every act of restraint was a flashing red light about the fragility of democracy. When King George III croons “You’ll be back… to remind you of my love,” it’s hilarious — until you realize it’s not. That’s how tyrants talk. They confuse control for affection, obedience for devotion. When Washington sings “One Last Time” — based on his real farewell address — he models something revolutionary: the peaceful transfer of power. He steps down when he could have stayed. He walks away from the throne that never was. That’s what makes him extraordinary. And that’s exactly what’s missing in today’s America. <image:caption>The parallels between 1930s Germany and modern America are impossible to ignore. Hitler promised to “make Germany great again.” He built his power on resentment, scapegoating, and myth. He dismantled institutions slowly — legally — until there were no checks left. Project 2025’s authors call it “unitary executive authority.” The Nazis called it Gleichschaltung — “coordination.” Different words. Same playbook. Replace independent thinkers with loyalists. Control the story. Silence dissent. Redefine truth until only one voice matters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - History Has Its Eyes on Us: From Hamilton to Hitler to Trump’s America</image:title>
<image:caption>At the end of the musical, Eliza Hamilton steps forward and asks, “Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?” That’s the most radical act in the show. Because every dictator, every authoritarian, answers that question the same way: I do. But Eliza refuses. She builds schools. She writes. She preserves memory. She insists on telling the story her way — truthfully, messily, completely. That’s our task, too. To remember. To teach. To tell the story before someone else rewrites it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The founders wrote a system designed to resist kings. But systems don’t save us — people do. Every time we vote. Every time we speak out. Every time we challenge disinformation or protect a teacher’s right to teach, we’re doing what Washington, Eliza, and Hamilton tried to preserve: the living experiment of democracy. History has its eyes on us — not as spectators, but as participants. So let’s keep the republic. Let’s stay awake. Let’s stay loud. And for the love of every Broadway nerd, let’s not hand our democracy over to anyone wearing a crown — or even a red hat. GO VOTE. (Check your voter registration status HERE.)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Most people hear the word philanthropy and think of million-dollar checks and black-tie galas. But Cat is rewriting that definition. Her book, Philanthropy on a Shoestring, challenges us to see giving as something anyone can do — not someday, not when it’s convenient, but today. Her formula is simple: $1.40 a day. If ten friends each committed $1.40 a day for a year, that’s over $5,000 — enough to fund a nonprofit grant, keep the lights on for a women’s shelter, or provide meals for hundreds of families. You don’t need a foundation to be a philanthropist. You just need heart, intention, and a permission slip — one you write for yourself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Grief to Global Impact with Cat Curry-Williams: Why It’s Time to Rethink How We Give - When we show up for others, we don’t just change their lives — we change our own. Cat said it best on Carrie On!: “The solution to pain is not to divide and separate, but to join and include.” Whether you’re volunteering your time, donating a few dollars, or amplifying a mission you believe in, you are part of the ripple. You are helping close that 1.8% gap. You are reminding the world that generosity doesn’t belong to the wealthy — it belongs to the willing</image:title>

<image:caption>Pick one cause that moves you. Maybe it’s women’s health, education, or local food insecurity. Start there. Set a daily giving goal. $1.40, $5, whatever works for you. It’s not about the amount — it’s about the habit. Rally your friends. Turn your next book club or dinner into a micro-giving circle. Support women-led nonprofits. Visit She Angels Foundationto see who’s doing the work and how you can help. Share the message. Post, talk, text, tell — the ripple grows when you do.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every time we give, we’re casting a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. A world where playgrounds are built for every child. Where women’s voices are funded and heard. Where grief becomes fuel for good. So today, don’t wait for “someday.” Write your own permission slip. Join a giving circle. Give what you can — even if it’s just $1.40. Because philanthropy isn’t about the size of your wallet. It’s about the size of your why.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Barsi came to Los Angeles to pursue acting—with all the headshots, auditions, and endless advice that come with the territory. But she quickly realized something was off: “It became all business. Everyone was telling me who I should be and how to fit into a box. I felt drained and confused.” Her creative energy was being stifled by constant rebranding and external expectations. Eventually, she reached a breaking point:</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just as her business was taking off, Barsi’s world turned upside down again. “In 2019, I had two concussions. Everything went dark—literally. I’d have to sit in silence for hours because I couldn’t open my eyes.” At a time when podcasting was booming, she was forced to slow down and rebuild her capacity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When Barsi works with clients who feel stuck or overwhelmed, she guides them back to their intuition through what she calls self-attunements—gentle practices to reconnect with your inner wisdom. One of her favorite reframes: “I realized I was saying, ‘This is so hard,’ all day long. So I started asking, What if it were easy? It sounds simple, but that one question changed how I solved problems.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What If It Were Easy? From Burnout to Boss Goddess with Christina Barsi - From Guide to Goddess</image:title>
<image:caption>Though Barsi is a certified coach, she prefers the term guide. “My purpose is to help people remember that they are powerful—that they already have the answers. I just help them find them again.” And she walks that talk, too—relying on her own circle of support (including a fellow member of the BRA Network community, Joy Guide June) and her husband to remind her to pause, breathe, and eat between creative bursts. “It’s easy to forget your own advice when you love what you do. But that’s why community matters.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What If It Were Easy? From Burnout to Boss Goddess with Christina Barsi - Final Wisdom</image:title>
<image:caption>As we wrapped our conversation, Barsi offered one last piece of advice for anyone standing on the edge of their next chapter: “You don’t have to jump. You just have to ask, What would it feel like to trust myself? Let that question guide your next step.” Because maybe—just maybe—reinvention doesn’t have to be hard. Maybe it can be easy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Food Helped Heal Generational Trauma: A Conversation with Chef Katie Chin - From Lunchbox Shame to Michelin-Worthy Love</image:title>
<image:caption>Katie grew up as one of six children in Minneapolis, the daughter of Chinese immigrants who wanted nothing more than for their kids to live the American dream. But in the 1960s, that dream was… complicated. Her parents encouraged her to assimilate—to fit in, blend, adapt—while at home, she was expected to be dutiful and respectful of her heritage. She describes it as “fish out of water” living. Her lunchbox held barbecued pork buns while the other kids ate bologna sandwiches. Inside the home, food meant love. Outside, it meant shame. That tension followed her into adulthood—until she finally found the courage to face it head-on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Food Helped Heal Generational Trauma: A Conversation with Chef Katie Chin - A Mother’s Love, Measured in Meals</image:title>
<image:caption>When Katie left her job as a senior VP at Fox and her unhappy marriage all in the same month, she did something radical: she invited her mother back into her kitchen. At first, it was about recipes. Her mom would fly from Minnesota to Los Angeles to teach her how to cook again—stirring lemon chicken while quietly stirring up memories long buried. But what emerged from those cooking sessions was something far deeper than food. They became a shared language of healing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Food Helped Heal Generational Trauma: A Conversation with Chef Katie Chin - Breaking the Silence</image:title>
<image:caption>For decades, Katie’s family never spoke about her sister’s suicide. In many Chinese-American households, grief is private, pain is hidden, and “you don’t dwell on the past.” But silence is its own kind of poison. Katie decided to break the pattern. She wrote about her sister’s death and her own journey through therapy in an op-ed for USA Today—and was flooded with messages from readers thanking her for giving them permission to do the same. “I realized that by telling the truth,” she told me, “I was helping others heal, too.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Katie’s latest TEDx Talk, “Dumplings Released My Demons,” explores the science behind generational trauma—the way emotional wounds are literally passed down through our DNA—and how rituals like cooking can help rewire that pain. Cooking, she says, is meditative. It opens space for conversation. It invites presence. And when shared with others, it can become a gateway to release the stories that have held us captive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Food Helped Heal Generational Trauma: A Conversation with Chef Katie Chin - The Art of Reinvention</image:title>
<image:caption>Katie’s story is, at its core, about reinvention. She’s gone from entertainment executive to cookbook author, from performer to culinary ambassador. She’s written five cookbooks, created a one-woman show Holy Shiitake: A Wok Star Is Born, and built a thriving catering business (WokStar Catering)—all while raising twins and using her platform to talk about healing and heritage. What I love most about her story is this: she didn’t wait for permission. She leapt, trusting the net would appear.</image:caption>

Instead of rushing to “fill the gap,” she poured her heart into building her businesses—her marketing company and the dance fitness movement PlyoJam. Her career became her love story. And for a while, that was enough. But as Stacey says, there comes a time when the hustle slows, the noise quiets, and your heart reminds you of what it still longs for.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a knee injury sidelined her from teaching dance, and a global pandemic slowed all of us down, Stacey felt ready to reopen her heart. She logged back into Tinder—half out of boredom, half out of curiosity—and found a message waiting from someone unexpected: Ryan, a high school acquaintance who’d always had a crush on her. The timing was uncanny. He had messaged her on the very day of her knee surgery. And just like that, a story decades in the making began to unfold.</image:caption>

No makeup, no staged perfection, just sunlight streaming through the trees, birdsong in the background, and a heartfelt promise for the future. It wasn’t about the grand gestures; it was about the quiet beauty of the moment. And in many ways, that’s the essence of love after 40: it’s grounded, real, and deeply cherished.</image:caption>

So whether you’re swiping on Tinder, dancing it out at PlyoJam, or simply living your fullest life—know that your story is still unfolding. Cheers to Stacey and Ryan, and to every 40-year-old bride (or 50-year-old, or 60-year-old) still writing her next chapter. Photo taken by BRA member Kathy Schuh</image:caption>

What might have taken years unfolded in just months. “Sudden death created a PTSD-like break,” J. explained. “It was as if the trauma unlocked Alzheimer’s that had been lying in wait.” From that moment on, caregiving wasn’t optional—it was urgent.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Bucket List Travel Over 40: Why Adventure in Midlife Matters More Than Ever with Two Peacocks Travel - At BRA Network, we know entrepreneurship is its own kind of adventure. It’s risky, exhilarating, and deeply rewarding. But it can also be isolating. That’s why stories like Sandy and Ana’s are so powerful—they remind us that taking leaps, trying new things, and finding your “travel besties” applies in business just as much as it does abroad. Adventure doesn’t always require a passport. Sometimes it’s launching a new offer, applying for a speaking gig, or joining a community of women who’ve got your back. But whether in business or travel, adventure is the path to growth.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - From the First Black Miss Alabama to TED Talk Coach: The Power of Storytelling with Toni Purry - Toni’s story isn’t just inspiring—it’s a blueprint for what resilience, purpose, and vision really look like. She shared how, after competing (and losing) in seven different pageants, she finally won on her eighth try, shattering a 72-year-old glass ceiling and becoming the first African American woman to wear the Miss Alabama USA crown. But that victory wasn’t just about the title. It was the beginning of her calling to help women find their voices, take up space, and lead with confidence.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - From the First Black Miss Alabama to TED Talk Coach: The Power of Storytelling with Toni Purry - Toni’s signature program, Ready for Ted™, is designed for women who are ready to craft a compelling talk and share their message with the world—whether on a TEDx stage, at a conference, or anywhere bold voices are needed. And here’s what I love about her approach: It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being real. Through values mapping, storytelling, and clarity coaching, Toni helps women build a talk rooted in: What you stand for (values) What you know deeply (expertise) What you’ve lived (stories) Sprinkle in a dash of confidence—and boom, that’s your signature talk.</image:title>
